Black gloss wall tiles behind the cooktop enhance the depth of the aubergine, while chrome door handles and stainless steel appliances work as a crisp contrast. “I added a few decorative items and touches of green for freshness and interest,” says the owner. For flooring, the owners choose colored concrete with a large grid imprint. The concrete adds warmth and texture to the room and creates interesting effects when combined with timber. Linda Christensen developed the concrete theme by introducing a Trowel laminate benchtop across two sides of the kitchen. “Trowel laminate looks like concrete. It has all the swirls and smears you get when you run a trowel over wet concrete. It has a totally smooth finish although it creates an almost three-dimensional textured appearance” she says.
“It’s now what I call an involved kitchen because it interacts with the adjacent living spaces. ”The table, made from rich-colored black woods is used as a breakfast area, while the black laminate bar top acts as an informal bench. The look is offset by brushed stainless steel pedestals and support posts. The owners also love the eye-catching aubergine cabinetry. “We really wanted to experiment with color and texture. The aubergine is deep, strong and has character,” says one of the owners.
