Compact kitchens perform many problems, but today there are more solutions
Living with a small kitchen doesn't mean you have to feel awkward or limited by what you can do.Thanks to careful design, it can be a highly efficient space that a pleasure to work in. In this section, we look at some of the ways to create workable, eye-catching kitchens that also suit individual lifestyles and tastes.
Functionality was a priority for the owner of this kitchen. As a former chef, he wanted a sleek kitchen that was easy to work in. To meet his needs, designer Sue Gillbanks introduced durable surfaces, strong, practical colors, and features that maximized space. Her choice of hard-wearing surfaces includes a granite benchtop, glass splash-back, and jarrah floor and servery. All appliances are stainless steel, including the pull-out pot racks and microwave cover. Two jarrah chopping blocks, one on either side of the hob, are also set in stainless steel." Because the owner entertains formally and prepares a lot of fresh food, he needs lots of bench space and surfaces that are tough and easy to clean," Gillbanks says.
The designer also chose a color scheme in earthly tones as she feels it reflects someone who's serious about cooking. The cabinet below the benchtop is a high-gloss beige. A cut-and-buff finish gives the cabinet an extra smoothness. The cabinet and jarrah also tone in with the lanka green granite benchtop, which has highlights of brown. Sue Gillbanks says this kitchen was a challenge because of its narrow shape.
A beige and chocolate color scheme gives the kitchen sophisticated, practical air. Extra warmth is added with a rich-colored jarrah floor and servery. Because the owner uses mostly fresh foods, a large pantry wasn't included in the design. Instead, wall cupboards and base pull-out pantries provide storage.
"It's the main traffic flow area and only 2,5m wide. It also has a wall on an angle, which we have had to work around. To provide storage without taking up floor space, the wall cabinets were takento the ceiling and finished with a simply detailed cornice.
The kitchen also features two angled cabinets set on either side of the refrigerator and several deep storage drawers. Beveled edges on the cabinets doors, drawers, and servery top help detract from the angled wall.
