For many of us with renting accommodation long term has its pros and cons. When it comes to modernizing our surroundings, many of us prefer to spend as little money and time as possible updating somebody else‵s property.
The tenants of this colonial-style 1930s bungalow wanted to modernize its outdated kitchen. They decided to keep within a tight budget and focus on improving the overall look of the room.Located at the back of the house and the original kitchen had tired with chocolate brown walls. These and the black painted timber joinery made the kitchen looks dark and dingy. A few coats of off-white paint on the walls and white gloss paint woodwork freshened and brightened up the room. Old teak cabinetry also has a gloss white finish now. White Formica and timber trims replace wood-look plastic worktops while slimline aluminum handles modernize cupboard doors. The tenants built in cupboards and all along one wall also with louver fronts on drawers to break up an expanse of doors. A cabinet can also emphasize any appliance, counter or floor color. While this solved a storage problem also it created others. Because of the rectangular shape of the kitchen, it meant plenty of exercise for anyone fetching and carrying items from one end of the kitchen to the other." Also with trying to remember what we kept in each drawer became increasingly difficult," says one of the tenants. To help resolve these problems plus a centrally located timber rack together with suspended from the ceiling also now provides space for hanging utensils.
A solid timber butcher‘s block underneath the rack provides central storage for pots and pans and other items used on a regular basis. Another advantage of the butcher‘s block is the timber chopping surface in easy reach of the sink. The bungalow's hillside location means cool breezes keep temperatures pleasant while a ceiling fan keeps the kitchen well ventilated.
The kitchen also has French windows opening on to a Sunny terrace. The couple usually eats on the terrace which is also ideal for casual entertaining. Quality European appliances installed by the tenants were considered vital to successful entertaining. Elegant and practical kitchen cabinets neatly arranged. They include a top of the range oven and dishwasher. Three fridges are in constant use while a fourth stores party food. The kitchen items were chosen for their practical good looks. A large collection of aluminum screw-top glass storage jars from Ikea makes it easy to find dry ingredients.
