This kitchen proves you can be a masterful chef and connoisseur of the great outdoors at the same time.
Located on a hilltop, the two-level family home was designed with a galley-style kitchen with direct access to a private veranda and garden.
One of the architects Andrew Stanic says a second verandah, which wraps around the front of the house, provides great hilltop views. "When we design the house we knew the owners would use the verandas as outdoor rooms. To tie the kitchen in with these spaces, we offset modern cooking appliances with natural materials," he says.
Brush box, used for the decking and external cladding, was continued inside and treated with tung oil and bees' wax. "Tung oil and wax is a far friendlier finish than polyurethane. It also allows spot repairs, it's easy to bring back to 'new', and the smell of a re-waxed floor is beautiful," Stanic says.
Painted cedar window frames and oiled cedar Venetians add to the timber look. Custom wood cupboards are stained walnut, lacquer finished and offset with a 38mm-wide, square-edged terrazzo benchtop. A range of modern cooking appliances and the extensive use of stainless steel testify to the owner's love for cooking.
A large stainless steel cabinet along one wall incorporates a wok burner, oven, ceramic and gas hobs, and stainless steel refrigerator and range hood." The owner wanted both gas and ceramic hobs because they love to experiment with many cooking styles," says Stanic. A panel of color-backed glass works an easy-clean splashback and adds a touch of white and green to the color scheme.
The kitchen by Stanic Harding Architects was designed with two purposes in mind. It had to allow the owners to indulge in their passions for cooking and the outdoors. The Terrazzo benchtop and the tongue-and-groove timber floor help create an outdoor feel, while a wide range of stainless steel appliances makes it an ideal cooking space. A while acrylic film between two sheets of 3mm glass works as an easy-to-clean splash back. The joint less surface provides a simple background to a busy cooking area. Oiled cedar Venetians regulate the amount of incoming sunlight, while double stainless steel sinks provide extra washing-up space.
