This country-style kitchen may be small in magnitude but it's packed with modern conveniences
There's no doubt about it, traditional kitchens are loving a resurgence in popularity. There's always a demand for features such as detailed cabinet making, age paint finishes and classics marble benchtops. This kitchen was renovated to suit the style of the existing home. The original kitchen was in the same location but was closed in and did not receive much natural light.
Owner and kitchen designer Stefan Mayer replaced an existing window with french doors and opened up the connection between the kitchen and the living areas. The kitchen shape is arranged in a square with a pillar in each corner and the working area in the center. "I wanted a balanced, symmetrical design to the best suit the location in the middle of the house," says Stefan Mayer And because everything is at arm's length, it's easy to keep clean and quick to work in.
The kitchen area is compact but well designed to allow people to work comfortably in the space. Full-height cabinets are positioned on either side of the double oven and cooktop. Doors open out and fold back to provide bench space under themselves. Crockery is stored at convenient chest height. The cabinet also has a wire mesh panel to allow air to circulate.
The integrated fridge and pantry are located on either side of the sink and breakfast bar. There's also a small TV built into the pantry unit. The sink area is lit with a fluorescent light hidden under the marble benchtop pelmet. Recycled Oregon cabinets are made in the traditional way with floating panels. They were hand painted using an aged effect, stenciled with a subtle diamond pattern and finished with a sealant on site.
The renovated kitchen has not moved from its original position, but walls have been removed to allow more light into the open plan area. Striking black and white tiles are used to delineate the thoroughfare. The asymmetrical layout makes for a compact and ordered design. The pantry and integrated fridge are positioned on either side of the sink and breakfast bar.
